Remember when

Do you remember when the Republican caucus ousted their own speaker? I’m not talking about Kevin McCarthy but Newt Gingrich. His party succumbed to substantial losses in the 1998 election and Gingrich was blamed for his polarizing rhetoric. How quaint. And the President didn’t use the Justice Department to start investigations into him. Who would have thought?

Do you remember Obama choosing to aim the FCC at Fox TV licenses to clamp down on their misinformation campaign and ‘bring them to heel’? No? Possibly because it didn’t happen. Because ideology is not a criteria for broadcast licenses.

Do you remember when the Biden Administration threatened to pull the broadcast licenses for TV stations airing Newsmax and Fox News after they were found to have deliberately spread misinformation about the legitimacy of the 2020 election. They paid millions of dollars to settle and made public apologies and retractions. No, you don’t remember that? Could it be because it never happened? Why didn’t it happen? Free speech. They were responsible for the defamation, but the government had no role in regulating it.

It’s simple – the government cannot regulate content of broadcasters based on ideology. Politicians are welcome to complain about statements by people they disagree with. They may sound whiny and thin-skinned but they certainly can complain. This Kimmel event (in which he said incredibly little) is way over the line and I predict will be a turning point in the current campaign for deciding what America’s values truly are.

And the national disgrace continues…
